Service status

Every minute we check the website, the map, the API, the MCP server, the history and the receiver network with real requests from Cloudflare's network, outside our servers: if our infrastructure stops, this page says so instead of stopping with it.

Some visitors blocked by mistake by the firewall

Affects: Website, Live map

From the evening of 20 October, visitors arriving from a Bing search, a Facebook link or Naver could open the first page, but from the next one on they were blocked on the whole site and the map. The block stayed in the following days too.

The cause was a generic anti-attack firewall rule (OWASP) that read the statistics cookie set on arrival as suspicious: that cookie holds the address of the page the visitor came from, and some query strings pushed it over the rule’s threshold. About 50 visitors a day were affected between 20 and 23 October. The REST API, the MCP server and the data were not affected.

That rule no longer applies to the pages of the site and the map, which are static; it stays on the API and on everything that receives data. We also added a daily check that tells us when the firewall blocks many more real visitors than usual, so a mistake like this one shows up for us the next day instead of in a report.

If you still see the block page, clear the site data for flyitalyadsb.com or try a private window, and write to us.

  1. Resolved 23 Oct, 11:21 CEST

Fix applied and checked against every referrer that used to be blocked. Visitors who were blocked can open the site and the map again, with nothing to do on their side.

  2. Identified 23 Oct, 11:05 CEST

We find the cause in the firewall events and reproduce it. It isn't just them: about 50 visitors a day since 20 October.

  3. Investigating 23 Oct, 10:55 CEST

A visitor writes that the site blocks them with "Sorry, you have been blocked" after clicking English, and that no page opens for them since.

For your own automated checks

Every component's status, updated every minute, is also available as JSON. Reading it doesn't use any requests of your API key.

curl -s https://flyitalyadsb.com/status.json | jq '.overall, (.components[] | {id, status})'

"overall" and "components[].status" are up, degraded or down (null = not checked in the last 10 minutes).

How we measure

The probes run every minute (history every 5) from a Cloudflare Worker, outside our servers, and use the same public addresses as everyone who uses the service. A failed check is repeated after 3 seconds before an outage is recorded, so a single lost packet doesn't count. Bars are per UTC day; data starts on the day we switched monitoring on, with nothing reconstructed before it.

Website We download a file of the published site (this page's feed). Operational if it answers correctly within 3 seconds.
Live map We open the map page. Operational if it answers correctly within 3 seconds; the data it shows is measured by "Live data".
REST API A real request with a key like a customer's: the aircraft within 250 km of Milan. Operational if it answers with the data within 3 seconds.
MCP server A real MCP connection (initialize) with the same key. Operational if the server answers within 3 seconds.
History Every 5 minutes we ask for an aircraft's available days. "Degraded" if the archive of older days doesn't answer.
Live data We look at how old the latest update is, not only at the answer: over 30 seconds is "Degraded", over 3 minutes "Outage". Fewer than 1,000 aircraft worldwide also means data is missing.
Receiver network The number of addresses sending us data right now, against its 7-day median: below 70% is "Degraded", below 30% "Outage". Several receivers behind one connection count once.
Multilateration (MLAT) The receivers connected to the MLAT servers, counted by name and compared with their 7-day median like the network, plus the 5 MLAT servers: if one doesn't answer, "Degraded".
